Pigeon Diaries (Recorded Version)

Today broke sunny and clear. The kind of breezy, warm day that hints at Spring; gets you opening windows and wiping the dust off shelves and bookcases. I swept then mopped the kitchen floor, working up a sweat as I went, then took my seat at the window. They broke into a relief of the Midtown skyline, and they were that rare dance and flash. The sunlight bouncing off and absorbing their feathers like little Chinese hand fans wavering in the drafts above the building tops.

I couldn’t be the only set of eyes on them, but it often seems that way.

Lately, I’m feeling mocked by their purpose. I keep trying to find some personal meaning to them, but I get stuck on conflicts between pattern and routine, departure and return, whether to shut up and do, or leave here for good.

***

Today I’m stuck with their absence. The only constant view is the gold crown of a high-rise building and a grid of construction lights glimmering like sunrays breaking up on a body of water. Then,

scattershot!

It’s like they were fed something hot and sweet. Or maybe it’s just the change in light, the anticipation of longer days. I can’t narrow them down to any single word or phrase. They’re like ideas coming in faster than you can put words to them, and the punctuation is whirling about them like the witch’s hairpins, whirling in place, then poof…!

***

The clocks jumped ahead at midnight. I’m happy to be back in the daylight hours, the warming nights, the truer dusks. I stand up straighter. The pigeons fly faster, and with far more abandon once the evening skies begin to burn away. Eventually they return to the coop like the reluctant turn of kids toward home.

***

At dusk, there’s a noble and fluent struggle in the natural world. Day diminishes and gives way to night. Night surrenders to stars. Even pigeons reflect that struggle. They really can’t bear it—but they do. Because there’s a morning and the struggle continues, the struggle continues--- it has to constitute a thoughtless burst out of a gate.

And there it is again: fed something hot and sweet. Fifty or sixty of them today, rearing up at maximum pitch… suspending…then tipping back down in a scattershot fan of confetti shot into the winds. Too chaotic to articulate, but enforcing my will and desire to remember you in no evident or obvious way. Just that you’re in there, in all that lively unrest they set loose in the sky, imbuing it with all that familiarity only I know of you, and you of me.

***

And they rise again no matter what.

On a cloudy, frigid day, only a few of them slowly at work, inundated with the cold.

A group of kids were chasing a black cat in a backyard. The Filth was investigating something the next block over, reds and blues swiveling silently in the middle of the street. None of them looked up. There’s an underlying sense of mine. The birds are something I see every day. I’ve invested a personal value to them. There are reasons. But I want to re-trace the reasons. Things are falling into place, and at other times, late at night, they’re falling off the table.
