The one-time world above is gone.
Five miles up and descending, the promises were final,
as if you’d found the vein of one good,
enduring thought to pour them all into

But no more of that. Not in the dark,
early morning when the old Chinese gardener
begins clipping and collecting limbs--- an agile man
in an agile flux: always more to do, more to stave off,
so the memories that don’t quit so easily,
the ones he seems so careful to devour and expel,
reach further east of him
and yet prevail upon the still and ripe forms
of his labor here.

On returning home, the same dog
barks just as witlessly.
The deadweight of unopened luggage on the floor
is not the past life a happy traveler returned feels.
Nothing in truth
remains of the promises
but a stale and lingering stupidity.
Even the favorite poet can’t help--- not in the dark,
early morning when What now?
What, exactly?
throb like a high that won’t quit.
A dominion of scent and voice escapes you,
so you may see the morning-pale face
waving from the window again,
clutching a goodbye.
You left
only to come back a haunted body
smoking in bed?
